My name is Bill Urell, and I admit it. I am a sobriety nerd.
I got clean and sober by doing what people told me to do – kicking, screaming and questioning. The key was I took correct action even though I did not know why I was doing the things I was doing. I got clean using the 12 steps. It was lie a foreign world.
I am very curious by nature and love to learn. I figured if I applied myself and loaded everything in the first year I wouldn’t have to worry about it any more. I studied, I researched and did the 12 steps. The result was I still work on my sobriety 25 years later, but ‘over doing everything in that first year was key for me.
I got addicted to drugs and alcohol and the lifestyle of ‘living for the moment’ – because I might be dead tomorrow. I’m not going to tell my story other than saying – been there, done that. The ‘great experimenter’, (that’s me), has done all kinds of drugs every which way and consequently suffered all kinds of misery and bad stuff happening.
When the pain of continuing my life as it was became too great, I changed. I started by getting clean at detox and treatment at age 37. I have been living sober in a fulfilling life relapse free for 25 years.
In a mid-life career change I left my position as a Food and Beverage Director of a large hotel. I was in an existential ‘What is the meaning of life and what is my life purpose phase. I wrestled with options and answers until my sponsor suggested I keep it simple. He stated ‘You’re purpose in life is to stay sober and share that.’ Pure genius!
I went back to school, and earned my Master’s degree in Addiction Counseling from Hazelden’s Graduate School. I have worked as a Primary Substance Abuse Therapist for 15 years.
I am approaching retirement and will not be working 1:1 in the clinical treatment settings. I have also had some health issues.I have decided to stay active in the field by creating an addiction recovery blog. The reach of the blog when we get rolling will satisfy my desire to help others, stay mentally active and sober.
I am living my dream. I moved from the chilly north to sunny Florida and bought myself a ‘mid life crisis’ used white convertible to soothe my soul…and it did. I live a mile or so from this beach. The ocean is in my soul and the beach is where I relax. My ultimate goal is to retire to an apartment with the ocean a step out my door.
About The Blog
This blog is simply my way of sharing my personal and professional experiences strength and hope for all addicts on the road to recovery.
This blog is an effort to simplify and break down the complicated issues of drug addiction and recovery. The basics are not really complicated – in fact they are simple, but not easy to achieve.
Depending on where you are on your recovery journey, you can refer to the most relevant of our 2 main sections. We have organized the blog into the 2 main components of permanent long term recovery:
- Getting Clean – You must stop using. You must stop thinking dirty and acting dirty.
- Living Sober – You must make the life style changes needed to become happy and fulfilled.
We need your input, comments and experiences whether you agree or disagree. Let’s talk!
A Final Word
It may be corny but… I believe what you give is what you get back, usually three times over.
I am living my dream. I moved from the chilly north to sunny Florida and bought myself a ‘mid life crisis’ red Mustang convertible to soothe my soul…and it did. I live a mile or so from this beach. The ocean is in my soul and the beach is where I relax. My ultimate goal is to retire to an apartment with the ocean a step out my door.
I beg your input, comments and participation!
